HISTORY

St. John's UMC is known as the oldest church in Anderson, SC. It began as a small, log structure without windows or any means of heating. At that time, it was located on West Benson Street.

On December 8, 1830, the deed was made for the church to move to the present location. The lot was originally purchased for $22. The lot was purchased for "use of the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church."

Due to the size and current structure needs, on November 20, 1958, land was conveyed at the present location for a new, spacious church to be built. In 1886, the new church building was erected.

The St. John's name was adopted between 1897-1989 during the pastorate of Rev. W. R. Richardson. Before that, the church was simply called "The Methodist Church."

The church continued to grow. The newest version of the church was completed and open for Sunday worship on Sunday, May 5, 1912. The building continued to have additions added and on April 22, 1923, the dedication ceremony was held.

This featured the new pipe organ that had been installed and the amazing stained glass windows that are still in the church today!

The church has continued to grow while still keeping our deep-rooted traditions and history alive.

We encourage you to visit the church and see the history of almost 200 years of worship and fellowship!
